History

Mustang Lounge, family owned and operated since 1964 was originally built in the 1780’s as a fur trading warehouse. The original building was constructed using a French- Canadian technique known as piece on piece joined by mortise and tenon. The building was remodeled in 2008 using the original timbers. Making it Michigan’s Most Historic Tavern.

Dennis Brodeur, a local born and raised on Mackinac Island, took over the Mustang Lounge in 1972. Dennis was in the Navy and piloted the F6F Hellcat as one of the first pilots to train on night carrier landings. Dennis’ love for his community allowed him to turn the Mustang Lounge into the favorite watering hole for island residents. Furthermore his passion for the armed services and first responders of our nation made Mustang Lounge a place where those members could come hang patches and share stories. Mustang Lounge now has over 600 patches from Police Departments, Fire Departments, and Armed Forces Branches from across the U.S.

Since Dennis’ passing his grandson Tony and childhood best friend Jason, have taken over the Mustang and continue to uphold the traditions set forth by Dennis. Tony himself is a member of the Mackinac Island Fire department as well as several of the staff members. Mustang Lounge being so closely affiliated with the MIFD is the only place on the island to sell MIFD merchandise with a portion of sales going straight to the MIFD.
